The book analyses the programming practices of the Yugoslav Documentary and Short Film Festival, from its founding in 1954 until the official end of its Yugoslav period in 2004, when it became international and changed its name to the Belgrade Documentary and Short Film Festival. The text examines how the festival participated in the process of forging of collective (national) identity in two states formed immediately before, that is, during its long existence. Both born out of war, they were of completely opposite natures – socialist and multinational Yugoslavia (1943) and post-socialist Yugoslavia, a country in transition to becoming a national and capitalist state (1992). Bearing in mind that the audiences tend to understand documentary cinema as a credible expression of reality and not as an artistic interpretation of it, the book examines which versions of “reality” the festival presented through its programmes in the dramatic social and political circumstances of the two periods under consideration.
