The aim of this paper is not to propose a comparative analysis, but rather an introductory reflection in order to highlight, starting with the figure of Apollo, the methodological cautions necessary for a historical-religious analysis concerning the status of ancient polytheisms. It is mandatory to consider the historiographical awareness in the course of historical-religious research as an extraordinary resource in order not to nullify rigorous research on such a complex topic that has recently been addressed through interpretations that are difficult to evaluate. Furthermore, it is necessary a special attention to the correct evaluation of ancient sources in their historical context.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is not to propose a comparative analysis, but rather an introductory reflection in order to highlight, starting with the figure of Apollo, the methodological cautions necessary for a historical-religious analysis concerning the status of ancient polytheisms. It is mandatory to consider the historiographical awareness in the course of historical-religious research as an extraordinary resource in order not to nullify rigorous research on such a complex topic that has recently been addressed through interpretations that are difficult to evaluate. Furthermore, it is necessary a special attention to the correct evaluation of ancient sources in their historical context.
