By focusing on a conflict between the bishop of Como and the patriarch of Aquileia in 1632, the article aims to show how the neatly separated roles of Church and State often mingled in the historical reality. To do so, it takes into account different scales of analysis (bishops, State authorities, Roman Curia, patricians, etc.).
