This chapter conducts a qualitative analysis of the representation of the COVID-19 crisis by Chinese media. We selected two representatives -- Caixin, a well-respected market-newspaper known for its investigative journalism, and CCTV, an official organ of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). By examining similarities and differences in the two media outlets’ coverage, this research points out the freedom and limits of market-media in crisis reports and the technics through which official media carved out a “story of victory” from the COVD-19 tragedy. In doing so, it provides insights into media management in the Xi era.

Abstract
This chapter conducts a qualitative analysis of the representation of the COVID-19 crisis by Chinese media. We selected two representatives -- Caixin, a well-respected market-newspaper known for its investigative journalism, and CCTV, an official organ of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). By examining similarities and differences in the two media outlets’ coverage, this research points out the freedom and limits of market-media in crisis reports and the technics through which official media carved out a “story of victory” from the COVD-19 tragedy. In doing so, it provides insights into media management in the Xi era.File in questo prodotto:
