Surnefecare is a very rare word, attested only twice in a vernacular translation in Hebrew characters of the Book of Jonah witnessed by the manuscript 3068 of the Palatina Library of Parma. Although its meaning is ‘to sleep deeply’, the etymology of the verb has nothing to do with sonno ‘slumber’, as hypothesized by the editor of the text. It derives instead from the Germanic loanword sornacare ‘to snore’, whose ending has been reanalyzed as the indigenous suffix -icare and replaced with -ificare. Sonno has interfered with the form of the word only in its later variant somnificare, occurring in a poem of Serafino Aquilano, which despite its pseudo-Latin aspect can be interpreted as a further evolution of the verb.

Abstract
Surnefecare is a very rare word, attested only twice in a vernacular translation in Hebrew characters of the Book of Jonah witnessed by the manuscript 3068 of the Palatina Library of Parma. Although its meaning is ‘to sleep deeply’, the etymology of the verb has nothing to do with sonno ‘slumber’, as hypothesized by the editor of the text. It derives instead from the Germanic loanword sornacare ‘to snore’, whose ending has been reanalyzed as the indigenous suffix -icare and replaced with -ificare. Sonno has interfered with the form of the word only in its later variant somnificare, occurring in a poem of Serafino Aquilano, which despite its pseudo-Latin aspect can be interpreted as a further evolution of the verb.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
