Recent epigraphic literature has, in addition to the traditional analysis of content and, possibly, of writing forms, also examined the relationship between support, content, writing and epigraphic dislocation, the so-called epigraphic topography, as well as extending the field of investigation to certain aspects such as the physical position of the stone mason, the hand gesture, the composition of the text, i.e. the mise en page, to name but a few. This opening up to new horizons has allowed a more articulate approach to aspects of epigraphic production not always dealt with, particularly in the medieval context. A number of cases of inscriptions from the 8th century to the 17th century were examined in order to verify the possibility that the text or medium may have influenced the layout and writing of the epigraphs. The combination of these elements would seem to have been functional for the construction of a writing strategy exposed over the over the centuries, but also taken into variable consideration, according to the societies that produced the epigraphs, according to the scripts used and according to the patrons.
La recente letteratura epigrafica ha preso in esame, rispetto alla tradizionale analisi dei contenuti ed eventualmente delle forme scrittorie, anche la relazione esistente tra supporto, contenuto, scrittura e dislocazione epigrafica, la c.d. topografia epigrafica, oltre ad aver esteso il campo di indagine ad alcuni aspetti quali la posizione fisica dello scalpellino, il gesto della mano, la composizione del testo, ossia la mise en page, per citarne alcuni. Questa apertura verso nuovi orizzonti ha permesso un approccio più articolato e rivolto verso aspetti della produzione epigrafica non sempre trattati, in particolare in ambito medievale. Sono stati esaminati alcuni casi di iscrizioni a partire dal secolo VIII fino al XVII per verificare la possibilità che il testo o il supporto possano avere influito sulla impaginazione e sulla scrittura delle epigrafi. La combinazione di questi elementi parrebbe essere stata funzionale per la costruzione di una strategia della scrittura esposta nel corso dei secoli, non solo, ma anche tenuta in considerazione variabile, secondo le società che hanno prodotto le epigrafi, secondo le scritture utilizzate e secondo i committenti
