The area covered by this investigation consists mainly of the present territory of the municipality of Nonantola, included to the west by the course of the Panaro River, which separates it from Modena and Bomporto, and to the east by the Via Imperiale, the persistence of an axis of Roman centuriation, which divides it from S. Agata Bolognese. The entire upper plain of Modena and Bologna is mostly characterized by a micro-relief of fluvial origin, alternating with more depressed areas, and by an articulated hydrographic network in continuous change, particularly during the centuries preceding modern reclamation works.
