Abstract

In recent decades, archaeology has given a crucial contribution to the historical reconstruction of the settlement of Nonantola, whose crucial role throughout the Middle Ages is linked to the monastery founded in the 8th century. The archaeological approach has favored a wide-ranging reading, aimed at understanding the environmental, as well as social, political and economic context, in which the monastery, first, and the castrum later. During the summer of 2015, a large sector of the main square in the historic center was investigated. The archaeological research was preliminary to an intervention of urban redevelopment already planned by the municipal administration of Nonantola.
