Is language one of the causes of social ills such as poverty, poor mental and physical health? This chapter discusses data and presents cases that support such a view. It argues in conclusion that migrant and indigenous languages are more important for their speakers and society than has been thought. The question emerges to what extent does the loss of language and everything that accompanies it (a sense of belonging, knowledge, cultural autonomy, etc.) affect the wellbeing of indigenous populations and migrants? Better understanding the social, psychological and physical effects of total linguistic assimilation has far-reaching implications for education policies and practices around the world.

Abstract
Is language one of the causes of social ills such as poverty, poor mental and physical health? This chapter discusses data and presents cases that support such a view. It argues in conclusion that migrant and indigenous languages are more important for their speakers and society than has been thought. The question emerges to what extent does the loss of language and everything that accompanies it (a sense of belonging, knowledge, cultural autonomy, etc.) affect the wellbeing of indigenous populations and migrants? Better understanding the social, psychological and physical effects of total linguistic assimilation has far-reaching implications for education policies and practices around the world.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
