Brief notes on the figure and work of Enrico Gismondi. This Jesuit, orientalist and professor of Scripture at the Gregorian, committed to promoting the opening of exegesis in the Catholic field to biblical criticism, has been little studied until now. Mention is made of his work in the Congregation of the Index, where he tried to defend Loisy, Houtin, Buonaiuti and other exponents of the movement for the renewal of religious studies; to his orientations in the field of biblical studies; to the criticism he was subjected to by the most conservative Catholic circles, but also to the esteem he enjoyed among the innovators. The objective is also to offer a small contribution to the understanding of a complex and tormented season of the history of the Catholic Church and of exegetical research, such as that of the modernist crisis between the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century.
