The Volga Tatars are the second largest ethno-linguistic group in Russia. This paper describes the relationships between the development of Tatar nation-building and the domain of death, focusing in particular on funeral rites. Mortuary practices can reveal several aspects of the complex cultural history of Tatar people. A particular emphasis is given to the dynamics of sociopolitical change, in order to show their influence on the current customs and policies regarding death.
