This chapter on Italian labour relations offers a periodization of trade union responses to deindustrialization processes. It sheds light on the industrial region of Northwest Italy, and thus contributes significantly to closing a gap in historiography, where Italian unions under conditions of deindustrialization have hardly been discussed. It discusses the changing context and effects of trade unions in the politics of deindustrialization from the late 1960s to the 1990s, considering changes in federal politics and economy as well as changing legal frameworks. This chapter opens new avenues for research in the field.

Abstract

This chapter on Italian labour relations offers a periodization of trade union responses to deindustrialization processes. It sheds light on the industrial region of Northwest Italy, and thus contributes significantly to closing a gap in historiography, where Italian unions under conditions of deindustrialization have hardly been discussed. It discusses the changing context and effects of trade unions in the politics of deindustrialization from the late 1960s to the 1990s, considering changes in federal politics and economy as well as changing legal frameworks. This chapter opens new avenues for research in the field.
