Over a century of archaeological excavations have contributed to increase the epigraphic corpus of Palmyrene Aramaic: numerous specimens of inscribed artifacts, mainly funerary reliefs that are today in public and private collections in Syrian and the Near East, in Europe, in North and South America, one also in Australia. The body of texts, close to 3000 inscriptions including bilinguals in Greek and Palmyrene, and trilingual texts in Greek, Latin and Palmyrene, allow for a reconstruction, at least in part, of the history of ancient Palmyra, Tadmor in Aramaic, and illustrate the complexity of its culture. Following an introduction, the volume presents an anthology of thirty inscriptions – in transliteration and translation with commentary – as examples of the main attested text-types. The text choice and relevant analysis offer insights into various aspects of Palmyrene epigraphy and Palmyrene culture.
