This chapter examines the Byzantine rewriting of patristic theology on the procession of the Holy Spirit, showing how the centuries-long controversy over the Filioque became a laboratory for dogmatic re-elaboration. From the ninth to the fifteenth century, Byzantine theologians transmitted, recombined, and transformed patristic material, producing new theological architectures through processes of quotation, adaptation, and argumental reuse. Rather than mere repetition, this constant reworking reveals a dynamic technique of “dogmatic rewriting,” in which authority and innovation coexist. The analysis focuses on how key authors—from Photios to Bekkos—manipulated inherited texts and ideas to construct an evolving Byzantine pneumatology, culminating in a complex mosaic of theological discourse where rewriting becomes both a hermeneutic method and a creative act.
Il capitolo analizza la riscrittura bizantina della teologia patristica sulla processione dello Spirito Santo, mostrando come la secolare controversia sul Filioque sia divenuta un laboratorio di rielaborazione dogmatica. Tra IX e XV secolo, i teologi bizantini trasmisero, ricombinarono e trasformarono i testi dei Padri, dando vita — attraverso citazione, adattamento e riuso argomentativo — a nuove architetture teologiche. Più che mera ripetizione, questo continuo lavoro di riscrittura rivela una vera e propria tecnica di dogmatic rewriting, in cui autorità e innovazione coesistono. L’analisi mostra come autori da Fozio a Becco abbiano manipolato e reinterpretato la tradizione per costruire una pneumatologia bizantina in continua evoluzione, dove la riscrittura diviene al tempo stesso metodo ermeneutico e atto creativo.
