Japanese cinema, contrary to popular opinion, really has very few references to nō theatre despite the fact that one of its first works, Viewing Scarlet Maple Leaves, is the adaptation of the well-known traditional performance piece of the same name. Many times western critics have tried to impose strained interpretations of the underlying influences, especially when traditional masks appear on screen. This essay traces an outline of the main adapations from nō theatre by underlining the cultural crossing points between the two artistic fields.
