The translation of the echoic binoms occurring in classical Chinese texts represents a challenging task. As for the Book of Songs as a whole (edited in its present form probably in the VI century B.C.), the identical reduplicatives (echoic binoms with reduplication of two identical morphemes) occur about 700 times, while the occurrences in the section known as Airs of the States are more than 200. The main purpose of the Author, who is preparing for publication a complete Italian translation of the 160 Airs of the States , is to emphasize the need to thoroughly investigate the stylistic nature of the identical reduplicatives in order to offer a translation retaining a few ofthe many perfumes of the original.
