This paper is motivated by the increasing importance that the People’s Republic of China is gaining at the international level and by the relevance of the effects, at the national and international levels, of Government policy interventions in the health care sector. These reforms, together with other important reforms in the pension system, may have important consequences on the social and economic well-being of millions of people. Through a review of the literature, this paper aims at evaluating the impact of the recent health care reforms in the urban and rural areas on health care demand, out-of-pocket expenses and household saving.

Abstract
