The article provides an in-depth review of all sources for the reconstruction of political history of the upper Tigris region, in the third millennium BCE. The individual historical sub-phases are treated in detail, from early urbanization within the region in the late IV millennium, down to the fall of the third dynasty of Ur at the very end of the XXI century BCE.
