I sobborghi di Vienna attorno al 1700: "A Place so perfectly delightful"

This paper analyses the policy and the strategies of the court and the aristocracy to increase the aspectum nobilem of the city of Vienna through the construction of sumptuous buildings. While the old city within the walls and the surrounding suburbs were seen as two complementary units as early as the mid-17th century, only after the second Turkish siege of Vienna (1683) was there an extraordinary increase in suburban palaces. The cartography reflects this changed image.
