Verdi e la rivoluzione: «Les Vêpres siciliennes»

The relationship between Verdi and the Risorgimento, exalted by the hagiographers who have framed the figure of the composer as one of the greatest artistic references of the movement, is not so clear. In dealing with the story of a revolutionary movement in an Italian key, the Sicilian Vespers, he seems to lose faith in the possibility of redemption of the people, too inclined to listen to the political masters. The musical analysis, in relation to the story and the plot, allows us to put forward hypotheses that are not at all obvious.

Il rapporto fra Verdi e il Risorgimento, esaltato dagli agiografi che hanno inquadrato la figura del compositore come uno fra i massimi riferimenti artistici del movimento, non è così chiaro. Trattando la vicenda di un movimento rivoluzionario in chiave italiana, i Vespri siciliani, sembra anzi perdere fiducia sulle possibilità di riscatto del popolo, troppo incline ad ascoltare i mestatori politici. L'analisi musicale, in relazione alla storia e alla trama, consente di avanzare ipotesi affatto scontate.
