The volume Suito toshite no Tōkyō to Venezia: Kako no kioku to mirai e no tenbō (Tokyo and Venice as Cities on Water. Past Memories and Future Perspectives) puts together seventeen essays of leading scholars of architecture, history, geography, sociology, urban planning, literature and arts. They focus on the historical and cultural dimension of these cities built on water, their cosmopolitan vocation, the issues related to the structuring and conservation of the landscape, as well as the significance that the past water and waterfront management may reveal for the future governance of these and other water cities that are seeking new ways of living. The chapters are preceded by an introduction written by Jinnai Hidenobu, and a conclusion written by Rosa Caroli (pp. 447-51).
