This chapter presents a critical overview of main issues regarding Spanish lexicon. It offers a definition of lexical unit as well as of some fundamental and basic notions in lexicology. Afterwards, the chapter reviews the historical formation of Spanish lexicon paying special attention to history, geographical variation, word-formation mechanisms, and the adaptation of borrowings from other languages. The presentation of the content is guided by a contrastive and comparative approach with Italian. Throughout the chapter, the reader will find activities to put theoretical notions into practice.
