Ottavio Leoni was born in Rome to Ludovico, a goldsmith, medallist and wax portraitist, employed at the Papal Mint in 1574, perhaps around 1578. Trained under his father, he developed his talent by looking up to Federico Zuccari or Hendrick Goltzius and became one of the greatest portrait miniaturists of his time, as well as a good painter. He worked for the most important patrons of his time. In 1603 L. was involved in the famous trial against Caravaggio, accused of defamation by Giovanni Baglione. He died in 1630 in Rome.
