Leonardo Malatesta (or Leonardo da Pistoia) was born in Pistoia to Francesco di Lazero and was baptised on 11 February 1484 at Nativitate (see p. 180 of Rogers Mariotti, which is the main source for a biography of M.). It is not known in which workshop he was trained. M.'s pictorial language was updated in the wake of Raphael and Fra Bartolomeo, a stylistic matrix that informs practically all of the artist's production. This is the case of the Madonna Enthroned with Child between St. Sebastian, St. Stephen, St. Lawrence and St. Nicholas of Bari, and four angels in the Civic Art Gallery of Volterra. His works include the Madonna and Child in the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin and the Madonna and Child with Saints John and Bernardino in the Musée des beaux-arts in Dijon.
