A pupil and later collaborator of Ghirlandaio, the painter Sebastiano Mainardi (San Gimignano, 23 Sept. 1466 - Florence?, Sept. 1513) was mainly active in Tuscany. After working alongside his master in the Tornabuoni chapel in S. Maria Novella, his first work as an independent painter was the frescoes in the nave of the church of S. Agostino in San Gimignano. Still using Ghirlandaio's cartoons, he painted the frescoes in the Baroncelli chapel in S. Croce and worked alongside him in the main chapel of Pisa Cathedral. He then returned to work independently in San Gimignano, where among other places he frescoed the atrium of the spedalingo di S. Fina.
