samā. L'ascolto e il concerto spirituale nella tradizione sufi

The term samā' literally means 'listening', 'audition' and, later, spiritual concert. It first appeared in treatises composed in Sufi circles around the middle of the 10th century A.D. in the Baghdad area: during those very first samā' people listened first of all to the cantillation of the Koran, gradually flanked by poetry of an amorous/mystical nature, which could then be interwoven with the sound of musical instruments. This listening could give rise to intense inner states and uncontrollable physical movements in the absorbed participants. Little by little, samā' became one of the typical practices of tasawwuf ('Sufism') and a variety of repertoires and genres flourished among the many brotherhoods in the vast Islamic world that have come down to the present day and which this book examines in some specific cases. The book is enriched by poetry from the Sufi milieu selected and translated by friends and colleagues Giampiero Bellingeri (Ottoman Turkish), Thomas Dähnhardt (Urdu), Stefano Pellò (Persian), Ermanno Visintainer (Chagatay Turkish) and by a travel note from Leonilda Candotti.

Il termine samā‘ significa letteralmente "ascolto", "audizione" e, per esteso, concerto spirituale. Esso appare inizialmente in trattati composti in ambienti sufi verso la metà del X sec. d.C. nell’area di Baghdad: durante quei primissimi samā‘ si ascoltava innanzitutto la cantillazione del Corano, gradualmente affiancata da poesia di carattere amoroso/mistico alla quale poteva poi intrecciarsi il suono di strumenti musicali. Da questo ascolto potevano sorgere negli assorti partecipanti degli intensi stati interiori e degli irrefrenabili movimenti fisici. Poco a poco il samā‘ divenne una delle pratiche tipiche del tasawwuf (“sufismo”) e fiorirono svariati repertori e generi tra le molte confraternite su del vasto mondo islamico che giunsero sino al presente e che questo volume prende in esame in alcuni casi specifici. Il libro è impreziosito da poesia nata in ambiente sufi selezionata e tradotta dagli amici e colleghi Giampiero Bellingeri (ottomano turco), Thomas Dähnhardt (urdu), Stefano Pellò (persiano), Ermanno Visintainer (turco chagatay) e da una nota di viaggio di Leonilda Candotti.
