The paper proposes a novel analysis of V2-relatives in German and discusses the advantages of the new approach with respect to the standard analysis by Gärtner (2001, 2002).

In this paper, we discuss the properties of verb placement in Modern German relative clauses and link it synchronically to mood alternations in Romance languages. Then, starting from the observation that Old High German (OHG) also exhibits mood alternations, we will provide a diachronic account for the interaction between mood and verb placement in earlier period of the language.
