The paper presents, connects, and analyses the historiographical and documentary sources in Syriac that described the city walls and the citadels of Edessa from Late Antiquity to the Middle Ages. Particular attention is paid to the floods that destroyed part of the walls in Late Antiquity and to the role the citadels played during the Crusades.
