This book discusses the architectural and artistic culture during a particularly fortunate period in the history of the eastern-Adriatic town of Cres (Cherso) from the mid-15th until the mid-17th century, after it became the seat of the northernmost insular county of the Venetian Dalmatia. Cres took over the role of the seat of both Venetian rector and the bishop who previously dwelled in the ancient Osor (Ossero), now left out from the naval routes and infested with malaria.This translatio imperii instigated the demographic expansion of Cres and the subsequent arrival of both builders and commissioners, protagonists of this study.
