During the first millennium, the different Christian communities in the East and West composed and developed various legends concerning the figure of Pontius Pilate, with both positive and negative purposes. This study presents the development of these legends by analyzing the contemporary historical sources, the evangelical narratives on Pilate, and the Apocryphal Cycle on Pontius Pilate, which has come down to us in various languages: Greek, Latin, Syriac, Coptic and Arabic.
