This contribution provides an overview of 'human difference' within the animal genus, comparing the line opened up by Aristotle and Thomas with that opened up by Hume and Bentham. It then addresses - from a philosophical point of view - the question of so-called 'animal rights', considering the debate from Kant to Regan. The figure of "speciesism" is traced back to a balanced consideration of the specificity of the conscious life of the human being and of the specific qualities of the psychic life of higher animals, understood as bearers of a mystery of their own and not as missing humans.

Abstract

This contribution provides an overview of 'human difference' within the animal genus, comparing the line opened up by Aristotle and Thomas with that opened up by Hume and Bentham. It then addresses - from a philosophical point of view - the question of so-called 'animal rights', considering the debate from Kant to Regan. The figure of "speciesism" is traced back to a balanced consideration of the specificity of the conscious life of the human being and of the specific qualities of the psychic life of higher animals, understood as bearers of a mystery of their own and not as missing humans.
