This paper looks into clashes between social forces for and against nuclear technol- ogy in Japan after the Tohoku earthquake. It analyses the social constructs, in which ‘pure sci- ence’ is embedded, and the conditions that enable society's current avoidance of a truly scientific understanding of the situation. Finally, it points out the limitations of purposive consciousness.

Abstract
