The analysis presented in this paper intends to identify strategies that compensate the lack of online tools dedicated to advanced Italian-speaking students, for developing kanji recognition skills. Based on the analysis of students' difficulties in passing tests which require applying active skills in recognition and selection of kanji(s), I have tutored some students in researching and collecting adequate examples they considered helpful for their study with the purpose to import the results into a new exercise extension I have developed for the online e-learning software JaLea (Mariotti, Mantelli 2016). This extension allows the creation of exercises to enhance the skills to detect and select the appropriate kanji(s) for the formation of compounds in a given context.
