The essay analyzes «Phaedra» by Benjamin Britten (dramatic cantata for mezzo-soprano and small orchestra, 1976) from a queer point of view. It focuses on analysis of some musical motives, which are first presented in the prologue and then employed in the love declaration to Hippolytus. In the light of the analysis findings, the self-identification of the composer with Phaedra is hypothesized. Some studies by Philip Brett, Roland Barthes, and Francesco Orlando contribute to addressing the interpretation of the myth in this direction.
