Voglia di realtà (Aura, storia, pensiero critico)

The essay approaches Benjamin not only as a great thinker of literature but also as a unique thinker of history. Discussion builds on a close reading of two texts by Benjamin, neither of them published in his life time: a 1937 fragment on the aura and “On the Concept of History, “ and, enlisting the help of recent scholarship, tries to explain how Benjamin’s ideas on history and interpretation shed light on the current turn toward postcritique in Anglophone literary studies. re la recente svolta del pensiero critico in ambito angloamericano. Even though the turn seems to draw on philsophical realism and its thrust toward relational ontologies (as in the example of Rita Felski drawing on the work of Bruno Latour), I suggest that in fact some of the champions of philosophical realism (Steven Shaviro) return to the questions of Benjamin on the production of the new.

Walter Benjamin è stato e rimane uno straordinario pensatore oltre che della letteratura della storia. La bibliografia a livello internazionale è ricchissima, e il mio intento non può essere quello di contribuire all'esegesi benjaminiana. Tuttavia, nella prima parte propongo una close reading di due testi di Benjamin, nessuno dei due pubblicato mentre il filosofo tedesco era ancora in vita: un frammento del 1937 e "Sul Concetto di Storia." Costruendo su questa lettura e supportata da altri studiosi, nella seconda parte cerco di spiegare come le idee di Benjamin sulla storia e sull'interpretazione possano chiarire la recente svolta del pensiero critico in ambito angloamericano. Questa svolta, che negli studi letterari Rita Felski e altri hanno chiamato postcritique, come vedremo, è strettamente collegata al nuovo realismo filosofico che per certi versi riprende le domande di Benjamin sulla fuoriuscita del nuovo.
