The article studies Salvador Espriu’s irony in some of his works published during the period of the Spanish Republic and the Civil War (Miratge a Citerea, Aspectes). In order to better understand all his ideas about the topic, some other works published in the following years have also been considered (Primera història d’Esther and the short story Tres sorores). The relationship between irony, humor and sarcasm is also taken into account as far as Espriu’s works are concerned. According to philosopher Ferrater Mora, irony is an attitude inherent to times of crisis and in Espriu it rarely ends up with humour. The article also deals with Espriu’s self-irony which is closely connected to the author’s ethical attitude.
