When performing consecutive interpreting activities between Chinese and Italian an interpreter may encounter some challenges in rendering culturally-bound expressions. This is mainly due to the fact that languages are not isomorphic, because different intellectual traditions and mental categories might influence the way a linguistic community represents the world through its language. The comparative study of different metaphorical associations between Chinese and Italian may contribute to determine when semantic associations can be easily rendered in the target language, and therefore when a two-domain expression could be defined ‘ideal’ from an interpreting point of view.

Abstract

When performing consecutive interpreting activities between Chinese and Italian an interpreter may encounter some challenges in rendering culturally-bound expressions. This is mainly due to the fact that languages are not isomorphic, because different intellectual traditions and mental categories might influence the way a linguistic community represents the world through its language. The comparative study of different metaphorical associations between Chinese and Italian may contribute to determine when semantic associations can be easily rendered in the target language, and therefore when a two-domain expression could be defined ‘ideal’ from an interpreting point of view.
