Томазеов утицај на збирку "Canti serbi" Ђованија Николића

This comparative study is aimed at analyzing the influence Niccolò Tommaseo and his Illyrian collection (1842) exerted on Giovanni Nikolić’s Canti serbi (1894, 1895). Following Vincenzo Monti’s translation style, Nikolić gives an entirely target-oriented translation, starting from metric solutions carried out through unrhymed hendecasyllables. All traces of the orality that is typical of popular poetry are reprocessed according to the dictates of the Italian literary tradition: parataxes becomes hypotaxes, the formulaic epic style is almost completely eliminated, and enjambments occur quite frequently. This domestication is, however, reduced in the second edition. Echoes of Tommaseo’s translation can be noticed, especially in certain texts: expressions and even whole verses are copied, there is a greater presence of fixed epithets and parataxes, while enjambments appear less frequently.
