CLIL has developed as part of an integrated view of plurilingual language education. CLIL is embedded in other school subjects and explicitly aims to develop language competences, through and in them (internal plurilingualism). This widens the perspective of language education to that of the role of school subjects as contributors to the intentional development of students’ language education. For the aim of our discussion, we highlight two characteristics of CLIL that we feel have the potential for informing new insights in foreign language teaching.
