The identity of the actual and the rational can be understood and gained by the following thought developed in the Science of Logic: actuality has a logical character. This means, first, that actuality must be understood not as immediacy but as mediation: each given refers to another and proves to be dependent on that other. Second, actuality is, in its fulfillment, concept. This logical truth finds its realization only in the spiritual sphere. Only in the spiritual dimension actuality can manifest itself according to the properties of the concept, namely as self-reflection, self-determination and freedom. Even the natural reality can be regarded as “actual” only through the mediation of the spirit. Subjectivity, intersubjectivity, and objectivity of the spirit represent actuality in its full expression.
