By examining Giovanni Testori and Eduardo De Filippo’s rewriting of Shakespeare, this article analyzes the treatment – a mixture of hatred, love and pastiche – of Shakespeare’s work in Italian theater of the last part of the 20th century, in light of the vernacular and multilingual tradition that marks the history of the Italian stage.
