This article argues that notions surrounding zongjiao—the term used to translate the English term ‘religion’ in modern Chinese—emerged out of several processes of cross-cultural translation and linguistic accommodation that involved primarily, but not exclusively, China and Europe, the beginnings of which can be dated back to the seventeenth century.
