The aim of this paper is to demonstrate how the political reputation (often mystified and manipulated by the political regime) influenced the reception of foreign writers’ works in the USSR. With this purpose Italo Calvino’s case is considered. Following different stages of his literary fortune in the land of Soviets, allows to demonstrate how his political past played a decisive role in the interpretation of his works, reducing them to the common denominator of “Socialist realism”.

Abstract
