"Joy is Greater than any Sensuality: sexuality and maternity in L’arte della gioia". The novel "L’arte della gioia" by Goliarda Sapienza can be read by focusing on two themes that relate to women’s history: sexuality and maternity. This essay approaches these topics through the social relations promoted by feminism in Italy in the second part of the nineteenth century. The essay draws on ‘écriture feminine’ as defined by Hélène Cixous, to discuss how the novel compares to two literary experiences: "Althénopis" by Fabrizia Ramondino (1981), written around the same time as Sapienza’s novel, and the more recent "Lo spazio bianco" by Valeria Parrella (2008). Analysis of these texts permits us to define the writer’s work as a necessary ‘literary link’, connecting the past to the present.
Il romanzo "L’Arte della gioia" di Goliarda Sapienza, può essere letto focalizzando due temi cardine per la storia delle donne nel secondo Novecento, ossia sessualità e maternità, indagati in relazione alle battaglie civili del Femminismo ma soprattutto alla letteratura sia coeva sia recente, poiché quest’opera può considerarsi come un irrinunciabile ‘anello di congiunzione’ letterario fra passato e presente.
