Il Giappone made in Italy: civiltà, nazione, razza nell’orientalismo italiano

イタリア産の日本： イタリアオリエンタリズムにみる文明、国民、そして人種 本稿の目的は、近代イタリアのオリエンタリズムの枠内で、日本に関する理解の仕方を構成してきた、多面的な実践の役割を明らかにすることである。最初に、サバルタンな他者性の観念−−文明の観点ではいえば「東洋」、国民の観点でいえば「日本」、そして人種の観点でいえば「黄色人種」−−が、ヘゲモニックなアイデンティティの構築—自然なものとみなされた「西洋」や「イタリア」、「白人」といった概念と結びついている−−と、どのように交錯し、相互に関係してきたのか、を批判的に検討する。とくに注目するのは、1940年におけるイタリア、ドイツ、日本のあいだの三国同盟以降における、人種化された言説に見られる、込み入った両義的な転換−−「黄色い」他者から「白い」日本という同盟相手へ—である。これを、ファシズム体制の時期の雑誌『人種の防衛』（1938-1943）に掲載された、「日本人という人種」に関するエッセーの分析などを通じて明らかにする。

Japan made in Italy: civilization, nation and race in Italian Orientalism This article aims at investigating the role of discursive practices framing the idea of Japan within Orientalism in modern Italy. It is the first attempt to critically examine how notions of subaltern alterity in terms of civilization (the ‘East’), nation (‘Japan’) and race (‘yellow race’) do intersect and interrelate with the construction of hegemonic identity related to naturalised concepts such as the ‘West’, ‘Italy’ and ‘white race’. Particular attention will be given to the complex and ambivalent shifts within racialised discourses from the ‘yellow’ other to the ‘white’ Japanese ally after the Tripartite Pact between Italy, Germany and Japan in 1940, including the analysis of essays on ‘The Japanese Race’ published on the journal La Difesa della Razza (1938-43) during the Fascist regime.
