The contribution Seeking a Way out of the Impasse: The Filioque Controversy during John’s Reign investigates the theological exchanges between the Greek and Latin Churches under Emperor John II Komnenos (1118–1143), focusing on the Filioque controversy within the broader framework of Komnenian ecclesiastical and intellectual life. By analyzing conciliar sources and key theologians—from Theophylact of Ohrid to Niketas of Thessalonica—the study highlights the emergence of a more moderate and dialogical approach, which sought to resolve doctrinal disputes through canonical reasoning and theological precision. Particular attention is given to Niketas of Thessalonica’s Six Dialogues on the Procession of the Holy Spirit, a work that presents a balanced engagement with Latin theology and recognizes the parity of the two traditions. The essay also examines the development of a shared theological vocabulary and the subtle intersections between Byzantine and Western Scholastic thought, demonstrating that John II’s reign marks a pivotal stage in the history of East–West theological dialogue.

Abstract
The essay also examines the development of a shared theological vocabulary and the subtle intersections between Byzantine and Western Scholastic thought, demonstrating that John II’s reign marks a pivotal stage in the history of East–West theological dialogue.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
