The paper elaborates on the literary portrait of Publius Vatinius, a prominent contemporary of Caesar and Cicero, who is vividly depicted by Cicero himself and later by Velleius Paterculus. Most interestingly, a duplication of such portrait occurs in Tacitus' Annals, and refers to an obscure homonym of the time of the Emperor Nero. The rhetorical and literary factors determining such duplication are taken into account.
