This article concentrates on the intellectual friendship between Hofmannsthal and Pannwitz, a friendship which is very significant for the cultural critical debate in the German-speaking countries during and immediately after World War I. The aim of the contribution is to illustrate how this dialogue develops through different literary genres and styles and thus brings a peculiar idea of “Austria” and “Europe” into focus.
