Although the importance of water as a primary element of Chinese culture can be easily traced in Chinese film history and recognized in contemporary visual arts, photography and cinema, specific research in the evolution of connotation and political values of water in visual media is quite limited. The purpose of this study is to draw attention to water as a challenging environment in which the human body, specifically that of a swimmer acquires symbolic meanings.
