This paper analyzes Henry James's late novel The Ambassadors (1903) in order to investigate the complex relation between tourist expectation and lived experienced as mirrored in the consciousness of its protagonist. Published at the beginning of the golden age of American tourism in Europe, the novel stages the conflict between Old and New World in the context of the emerging culture of consumption. Supreme embodiment of the consumerist vision of European culture is Marie de Vionnet - a noblewoman who exploits and is exploited by a presumably innocent young American abroad. The paper focuses on Lambert Strether's evolving perception of an "incredibly human" tourist attraction.
